Zamrock: a look into the Zambian rock scene

Today we’re diving into the Zambian rock scene known as “Zamrock.” This genre emerged in the east African country of Zambia in the 1970s as a fusion of western-style psychedelic rock and traditional African rhythms.
In 1964. Zambia gained independence from England, and the newly elected president enacted a law that stated radio stations must play mostly Zambian music. This allowed the local music scene to flourish. Notable artists such as W.I.T.C.H. (We Intend to Cause Havoc), the Ngozi Family, and Salty Dog began to emerge. A theme among many Zamrock songs was the idea of freedom and unity, such as in the song “Black Power” by the band Peace.
In many places, music from African countries is often overlooked. However, Zamrock is a unique style of music filled with a complex history that deserves more attention. While listening to Zamrock, make sure to check out music from other African countries such as Ethiopia and Burkina Faso that have just as interesting musical histories.
