QUESTLOVE Live streams

Questlove (Roots, Fallon) has been doing live streams where he focuses on a particular artist for ~3hrs. He goes through the history, the samples and all the fine details you could ask for.  You can find them on youtube. My favorite has been the one on Marvin Gaye.

Will This Make Me Good – Nick Hakim

This album isn’t out yet but he’s released two singles that already hit. They are more on the indie side but they’ve certainly got soul.

Songs I LIKE: Qadir, Crumpy

If YOU LIKE: Moses Sumey, Serpent With Feet, Seinabo Sey, Blood Orange,

Forever, Ya Girl – Keiyaa

To me Earl Sweatshirt kind of set a new precedent in rap. He took  90’s East Coast Hip Hop sinister grittiness, MF DOOM- esque casual-talking flow, contemplative gospel sounds and combined them over slow tempo’d weird samples. It was only a matter of time before artists would somehow adapt this style into an R&B form and that what Keiyaa  does.

Contents wise this album doesn’t stray far out the norm… love, loneliness, insecurity, “Niggas ain’t shit”, inspiration for black people. I don’t mean this as a criticism; its an honest body of music.

Song I LIKE: Rectifya, Hvnli, Hvli Reprise (<<those 3 tracks are a cool 10 minutes), Negus Poem 1 & 2, Nu World Problems

If YOU LIKE: liv.e, Melanie Charles

Catch – Peter Cottontale

This is a Gospel/Hip-Hop album. Take note that I’ve put Gospel ahead of Hip-Hop. I listened to this album a lot over this past (gorgeous) weekend. When I was a kid I used to pass judgement on people who ran to religion when they were struggling. As I got older (25 now) I’ve realized that’s stupid. On Soundcloud the album is tagged as “Inspirational” and for me it lived up.

Song I LIKE: Forever Always, When I Get There, God is Love, Shoes

If YOU LIKE: Chance The Rapper, The Oh Mys, New Direction, Kirk Franklin, Lecrae (IDK many folks in this genre tbh)

Pray For Paris – Westside Gunn

I ain’t street in the least bit to be frank, but sometimes I be in a mood. You gonna need rap genius for sure.

Songs I LIKE: 327, Frenh Toast, Versace,  Party wit Pop Smoke, Le Djoliba

If YOU LIKE: Conway the Machine, Benny the Butcher, Roc Marciano, Action Bronson,  Your Old Droog, Apollo Brown … Anybody The Alchemist has produced for.

Flamagra – Flying Lotus

I had no idea this came out a year ago. GENRE: Electronic/ R&B / Funk / dudes who like anime more than you expected? I was very productive listening to this.

Song I LIKE: More, Spontaneous, Takashi, Remind You, 9 carrots, Land of Honey

If YOU LIKE: Thundercat, Little Dragon, Kaytranada, Toki Monsta,  Sampha, SBTRKT,
